“The most powerful anti-aging drug is a fork.” Dr. Michael Greger.
I recently finished How Not to Age by Dr. Greger and was astounded at the level of study and information presented in the book. I am even more impressed that he has created a free website, nutritionfacts.org, which has even more information about the things we ingest. I enjoy when a book says what I expect, but explains it in depth. This book gets into it. We get into the weeds of aging and what we can do to prevent. Tl;dr, eat more produce, drink water, and exercise.
I was also glad that he included an anti-aging 8 in he back of the book to give you a good place to start your healthy anti-aging foundation. The 8 anti-aging items mentioned are:
- nuts; walnuts in particular
- greens
- berries; blackberries in particular
- xenohormesis and microRNA manipulation
- pre and postbiotics
- caloric restriction
- protein restriction
- NAD+
Basically, this book is a deep dive on how to revamp your life to promote your longevity. From reading ths book, I have already started making changes. I have some form of produce with most of my meals and try to start my meal with something green and water. I’ve also started adding flaxseed and wheat germ to my soft or liquid foods. I’ve been eating berries more regularly and bought some wlanuts with the intention of eating them more regularly as well.
A lot of the things mentioned in the book, I’d heard about before as I’m working on improving my health and diet, but I’d not heard about them to the level of detail that he mentions. At this point, I think I need to read the rest of his books to complete the picture and learn all I need to know. THen, I can be the “How not to…” master. *insert evil laugh* Until then, I’ll keep reading my other books and working on making lifestyle changes to be my healthiest version of myself.
At the end of the day, we are in complete control of what we eat and the lives we lead. I am so glad that this book puts the ball in our court and empowers us to make changes to support our best and healthiest lives.
